Vote Nadel, Kaplan, Brunner, Gilmore, and Juarez for Oakland Council

Rebecca Kaplan(at large)

Help elect long-time dedicated environmental advocate Rebecca Kaplan to the at-large seat on Oakland City Council. Rebecca has a background as a civil-rights attorney, legislative aide, and policy advocate, and has served as an elected "at-large" director on the AC Transit Board, giving her the experience and vision to take effective action.

At AC she spearheaded solar-power projects and the launching of nation-leading alternative- and sustainable-fuel programs. The new all-night transit service she implemented covers BART routes after midnight. Combining local jobs and apprenticeship programs with "green technology", Kaplan has strengthened the connections between our economic prosperity and environmental health.

Rebecca will bring the same leadership skills to the Oakland City Council. Her plans include:

Rebecca has the vision and the skills to improve quality of life and the environment.

Nancy Nadel

(District 3 - West Oakland, Adams Point, Old Oakland, and Jack London Square)

Nancy Nadel has been an environmental leader on the Oakland City Council since 1996. Before that, Nancy was an elected director of the East Bay Municipal Utility District, where she served two terms. Nancy has worked continually to reduce diesel pollution at the Port of Oakland, improve recycling, ban polystyrene foam, and bring clean energy to the city. She led the passage of Oakland's green-buildings ordinance, requiring all city building projects over $3 million in construction costs to meet a minimum Silver rating under the LEED rating system. She also spearheaded the city's Zero Waste by 2020 ordinance.

Nancy will be facing a strong challenger, and has earned our support.

Jane Brunner

(District 1 - North Oakland, Rockridge)

Oakland Councilmember Jane Brunner is committed to:

Jane co-chaired Oakland's Sustainable Community Development Task Force that developed the Sustainable Community Development Initiative, which has led to Oakland building more solar-energy capacity per capita than any other city in the country.

Jane introduced the legislation that made Oakland the second city in the country to join the Chicago Climate Exchange and measure its carbon footprint each year. She also initiated a campaign that has planted more than 3,000 trees in Oakland, and co-chaired the campaign for Measure DD, which led to over $190 million in funding for Lake Merritt and the Estuary Trail from downtown to the airport.

Jane has been a major backer for the MacArthur BART Transit Village and for placing a priority on development at transit hubs. As chair of the City Council's Community and Economic Development Committee, she's made sure there is careful review and support for a large number of infill projects.

We are happy to endorse Jane Brunner because of her significant efforts to improve the environment, to make Oakland more livable, and to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions linked to climate change.

Clifford Gilmore

(District 7 - generally areas east and south of Keller Avenue to I-580, 82nd Avenue to International Boulevard, 69th Avenue to San Leandro, as well as the airport and Coliseum areas.)

As a youth in East Oakland, Clifford Gilmore benefited from District 7's unique endowment of open space, creeks, Bay shorelines, and parks.

As a councilmember, Clifford wants to continue to provide opportunities for residents in his district to enjoy nature in an urban setting. District 7 possesses tremendous natural resources, which add to the character of its neighborhoods and must be protected. Clifford is the best choice for his district to help protect and enhance open space, creeks, and Bay shoreline, while working to expand parks and make them more accessible to residents of his district and the city.

Cliff believes that revitalization of the inner city will occur through smart development. His goal is to attract mixed-income, mixed-use infill aimed at stabilizing lower-income areas by providing new market-rate and for-sale housing in convenient locations. This will bring people closer to employment centers and mass transit than outlying low-density sprawl development.

Clifford Gilmore understands the importance of appropriate urban economic and housing development, transportation and air quality, sustainability, natural-resource protection, and environmental justice. The Sierra Club urges you to support Clifford Gilmore.
