Our annual fundraising dinner was a stimulating evening of speakers and awards, with excellent food and wine in a beautiful setting on the Bay.
Sierra Club Marin Group was delighted to welcome our keynote speaker, Mary Nichols, the current Chairman of the California Air Resources Board. Ms. Nichols has devoted her entire career in public and private, not-for-profit service to advocating for the environment and public health. In addition to her work at the Air Board, she has held a number of positions, including: assistant administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Air and Radiation program under the Clinton Administration, Secretary for California's Resources Agency from 1999 to 2003, and Director of the University of California, Los Angeles Institute of the Environment.
Nichols was chosen to lead California’s efforts to reduce its greenhouse gases by 25 percent by 2020 under an anti-global warming law passed last year.
We celebrated our 2008 Sierra Club Awardees. Sierra Club Marin Group is proud to honor Don Neubacher with our Resource Conservation Award, for his longstanding personal commitment to working with the community as a leader and a strong Environmental Advocate. Don’s day job is as Superintendent of the Point Reyes National Seashore. The Hannah Creighton Environmental Justice Award is being presented to the Headlands Institute for their fantastic, integrated environmental and social responsibility programs serving young people from all walks of life and economic status.
Master of ceremonies was Dick Spotswood, Independent-Journal political columnist.
