Last call for election volunteers - your chance to make a difference in
the election!
Thanks to all the hundreds of Sierra Club volunteers who have been working to elect
pro-environmental candidates on Election Day, Tue., Nov. 2.
Many of you have indicated interest but haven't yet found the time. Well, this is it - the
final two weeks! We need your help now. Practically every day from now through
Nov. 2 there is a way to volunteer to make an important impact. There are critical local races
in every region of the Chapter, and the national battle is more significant to the environment
than any we've seen in years.
Please volunteer your time now. Contact the organizer listed below for your
region. Thank you - and on to victory!!!
San Francisco
The environmental majority on the Board of Supervisors is at stake!
The Sierra Club has seen some great victories recently due to a solid environmental majority
on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Our allies have helped us to stop the airport
expansion, and to push for more renewable energy and cleaner, better public transportation
in the city.
Most of these allies are up for re-election this fall; Jake McGoldrick is in the most
contested race and we are doing all we can to lend a hand, a foot, or a voice. We will be
walking precincts, making phone calls, waving signs. Please help one evening or weekend between
now and Nov. 2.
To sign up, contact Cathleen at (510) 848-0800, ext. 316, or by
Marin
We are working on two exciting campaigns in Marin:
- to elect Sierra Club volunteer and community leader Charles McGlashan, a true
environmentalist, to the county Board of Supervisors.
- to follow in the precedent-setting footsteps of Mendocino to enact Measure B,
a moratorium on the growing of genetically-modified foods.
To get involved, contact Roxanna Guide at (510) 848-0800, ext. 313, or by
Alameda County
We need your help in educating Alameda County voters on a wide range of campaigns. From
statewide races to local city councils and ballot measures, Sierra Club volunteers are working
to get the word out. With election weekend just around the corner, please join us in walking
precincts, making phone calls, and writing letters.
One special priority is in Albany, where three strong environmental candidates -
Brian Parker, Farid Javendel, and Robert Lieber - are in a tight race for three
City Council seats. A great environmental turnout on Election Day would create a majority on
the Albany Council that would forward efforts to protect the shoreline from a maxi-mall and
promote more sustainable development alternatives.
To volunteer on a campaign anywhere in Alameda County, contact Anna Oursler at (510)
848-0800, ext. 307, or by
Contra Costa
We have numerous high-priority environmental races in Contra Costa.
Re-elect County Supervisor Millie Greenberg. She has been an outstanding leader in
protecting the county's open space. In the final four days, we will be working all day (and
sometimes all night) to get out the vote. Any time that you can come lend a hand, we can use
your help, especially on Election Day, Tue., Nov. 2. To help, contact Nicole Drake today at
(925) 339-3842 or by
Moraga Town Council. Help elect environmental leader and Sierra Club activist
Lynda Deschambault. We have precinct walks and
campaign leafleting planned until the vote. To help, contact Nicole Drake at (925) 339-3842 or by
Antioch City Council. We are looking for phone volunteers and precinct walkers to
help elect slow-growth advocates Brian Kalinowski and Reggie Moore. For upcoming
dates and volunteer opportunities, contact Nicole Drake at (925) 339-3842 or by
Richmond City Council. Fifteen candidates are vying for seats on the Richmond City
Council. Three of them - Tom Butt, Gayle McLaughlin, and Andres Soto - are standout
environmentalists, committed to open and responsive government. They could get the city moving
in a much better direction - if they get moving into office. To volunteer on this campaign,
please contact Anna Oursler at (510) 848-0800, ext. 307, or by
Hercules. Local environmentalists are locked in a battle with big-spending developers
over efforts to pass Measure M, which would protect Franklin Canyon from intense
development. We worked to place Measure M on the ballot, now we need your help to get the word
out on this important environmental measure. City Council candidates Charleen Raines, Don
Kuehne, and Howard Jones have endorsed Measure M. This will be a close race, and
volunteers may make the difference. To help out, please contact Jonna Papaefthimiou at
(510) 848-0800, ext. 312, or by
John Kerry for president
We are holding regular phone banks to call Sierra Club members in swing states:
- Thursdays, 6 - 9 pm at Sierra Club Headquarters, 85 Second St. (at Mission) in San
Francisco;
- Sundays, 1 - 4 pm at the Bay Chapter Office, 2530 San Pablo Ave. (just south of
Dwight) in Berkeley.
