Delta Group
"History and Adventure in the Marin Headlands"
Wednesday, November 17, 7 pm, Antioch Library, 501 West 18th Street, Antioch.
The Marin Headlands coastal area north of the Golden Gate, now preserved as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is rich in human history
and spectacular scenery. In 2005, Point Bonita Lighthouse will celebrate its 150th anniversary, having guided ships safely through the perilous Golden Gate Strait since 1855.
At the November general meeting of the Delta Group, park ranger Ken Lavin will present a slide program depicting the exploits of the 19th-century heroes who
risked life and limb in service of the "Light", and the 20th-century environmental heroes who saved the windswept ridges and valleys of the Marin Headlands from
development in the 1960s. Today, the Marin Headlands is home to many species of rare and endangered plants and animals, and its geologic features are studied by scientists
from around the world. Ken's program will show the animal and plant life of the Headlands, and some of the hiking opportunities on more than 70 miles of park trails.
In conjunction with our program, Ken will lead a tour and hike in the
Point Bonita Lighthouse area on Sat., Nov. 20.
Ken Lavin is an interpretative park ranger in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, former president of the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association, and a
former Executive Committee member of the Mount Diablo Group of the Sierra Club. Join us tonight to learn more about the history and beauty preserved for our enjoyment
in the Marin Headlands.
Delta Group program meetings are usually held on the third Wednesday (note revised day) in January, March, May, September, and November, unless otherwise
