Election priority: defend East Bay greenbelt
Developers have invented an insidious new method for undermining open-space protection. In
four cities on the eastern edge of the Bay Area - Livermore, Antioch, Brentwood, and Pittsburg -
developers have placed initiatives on the ballot. Masquerading as open-space protections, these
measures are actually attempts to break down the Alameda County Urban Growth Boundary and the
Contra Costa Urban Limit Line. If these measures pass, we can be sure that developers will be
back in future elections asking for more.
The developers have lots of money. The only tool we have to answer them is people power.
The Sierra Club asks for your help. If this is a quiet election season in your town, please
volunteer to help. If you can come to one of these cities for a few hours of precinct walking,
we need you. There will also be opportunities to do phoning, both in these cities and at the
Chapter Office in Berkeley.
For details on the individual measures - and on volunteer opportunities
- see the articles in the election section.
